Suggested Song:
“Jesus Can Do A Miracle” tune:  “Do You Know the Muffin Man?”

Jesus can do a miracle, a miracle, a miracle,
          Jesus can do a miracle,
          Yes, he can!

Can you do a miracle, a miracle, a miracle?
          Can you do a miracle?
          No, you can’t.

Student Application:
In today’s lesson, Jesus changed water into wine.  Jesus performed a miracle.  Can we do miracles today?  God gave Jesus the power to do miracles.  Miracles were used to show God’s great power so that others would believe.  What do we use to teach others about God today?  His word – the Bible.

Other Ways to Reinforce the Lesson:
1)  Reinforce the lesson by role playing.  Use the bride and groom dolls   found in the closet.  You might want to allow one of the children to be the bride while holding the bride and another to be the groom.  Also select someone to be Mary and Jesus.  Let the rest of the students be disciples, servants, and guests.  (If you can borrow more Barbie, Ken,  and GI Joe type dolls, let every child hold one to act out their parts.)
2)  Use the clear glasses found in storage box #112 and sprinkle some grape     koolaid in the bottom of each before class begins.  When you reach    the part in the lesson where the water turned to wine, pour water from a pitcher into the 6 clear glasses.  The water will immediately change to a purple color.  Explain to the kids that you did a trick, but Jesus really did do a miracle.
3)  Reinforce the lesson with the question sheets found in the Student Handout folder.
4)  Reinforce the lesson by allowing the children to place their lesson sheets      in their class notebooks.

This is the visual that I use for this Bible lesson. Thanks to Jenny Sandlin who shared it with me about 20 years ago. It never fails to get the point across!

The bride and groom were made using a simple "Barbie" doll and a "GI Joe" doll.  One of my former co-teachers, Denise Campbell, sewed the wedding clothing for the dolls. (If you do not sew but have a lady in your congregation that does, solicit her help. More times than not, you'll get an excited "yes!".

I set the bride and groom as well as a "water pot" and enough glasses for each child to have one on top of the file cabinet as a visual.  The water pot is filled with water. I let the children each drink a bit of the water so they would know for sure that this was water. (Before class, I have put just a little bit of grape koolaid in the bottom of the  glasses.  With the glasses being elevated this way, the kids can't see anything in the glasses.) After telling the lesson, I poured the water from the water pot into the glasses and the visual is awesome! Just like the miracle that Jesus did the water turned to wine...

The visual speaks for itself. The look on the children's faces is priceless! Of course, I go on to tell them that I can't do a miracle. I did a trick. But Jesus did a miracle! By the way, I don't give away my trick either.

          I.  Nicodemus
A.  A Jew, a teacher and leader of the Jews.  Nicodemus was a ruler in the highest Jewish council (government).
B.  A Pharisee – As a general rule, the Pharisees studied God’s law and were determined to keep every rule.   They were the strictest group of Jews who placed more importance on keeping rules than loving people.  Jesus told the Pharisees that their attitudes were wrong.

C.  Jesus explained to Nicodemus if he did not believe what Jesus had said, he would not enter heaven.

Suggested Song:
          “Trust and Obey”

4)  What must a person do to go to heaven?  Obey God’s      commandments (initially in baptism and after that, the way one lives his life)

Lesson Text: (Use flannel graph to tell the story.  Also, use map to show where Samaria is located.)
          I.  Jesus left Judea to travel to Galilee.
                   A.  Jesus was in Judea teaching at the end of the Passover                               Feast.
                   B.  His disciples were with him.
                   C.  On the way to Galilee, Jesus traveled through Samaria.
                             1.  Samaria was an area north of Judea and south of                                               Galilee
                             2.  Samaria was in the middle of Israel.
                             3.  The people of Samaria were hated by the Jews                                            because they were a people of mixed races.                                              They were Jews who had married people from                                               other nations around them.  The Jews looked                                                down on these people.  For this reason, most                                               Jews would not even travel through Samaria.                                                  They would travel a long distance just to go                                           around Samaria.
                             4.  Jesus was tired from his long journey and thirsty,                                                so He stopped at a well in Samaria to get some                                                 water while the disciples went to buy some food.
                                      a)  A woman of Samaria came to the well while
Jesus was there.  Jesus asked her for a
                                                drink of water.
                                      b)  The woman is shocked that Jesus has spoken
with her!  (Remember, Jesus was a Jew
and she was a Samaritan and a woman!)
                             5.  The Samaritan woman said, “How is it that you
Being a Jew ask a drink from me, a Samaritan
woman, for the Jews have no dealing with the
                                      Samaritans?”
                             6.  Jesus’ reply:
                                      a)  If you knew who I was, you would be asking
                                                me about living water.
                                       b)  If you drink of this living water, you will                                                      never be thirsty again!

II.  Samaritan Woman’s Response to Christ
          A.  She said, “I know one day the Messiah is coming and He will
                   explain all of this.”
          B.  Jesus tells the woman the He is the Christ
          C.   Samaritan woman rushes back to town to tell everyone about
                   seeing Jesus.

III. People’s Reaction
          A. Many believed it was Jesus
          B.  People came to the well and asked Jesus to stay.
                   1.  Jesus stayed for 2 days.
                   2.  Jesus preached to many people.

Student Application:
In our lesson today, Jesus taught anyone that would listen to Him.  Sometimes, others thought that Jesus should not teach some such as the Samaritans but Jesus showed His love for all by doing just that.  We must not show favoritism when it comes to teaching God’s word.  We must teach anyone who will listen.

Other Ways to Reinforce the Lesson:
1)  Reinforce the lesson with the Flash-a Card Bible Lesson under Life of          Christ – Series 3 – Jesus Heals and Helps – The Woman at the Well.
2)  Reinforce the lesson with the question sheets found in the Student      Handout folder.
3)  Reinforce the lesson by allowing the children to place their lesson sheets      in their class notebooks.

****Attention:  This concept is one that is difficult for the kids to grasp.  Hints and helps:  Try to make the point that the kind of water the Samaritan woman was looking for was water to quench her thirst.  Jesus knew that she needed something more than the physical water.  She needed something to make her acceptable to God and that was living water – or baptism.  Good Luck!
